Cheapest Rolex Watches

Paul Altieri

Because Rolex watches are luxury items, it is no surprise that they are generally expensive; however, it is not impossible to find cheap Rolex watches. For example, the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller watch model are both dive watches, yet one cost noticeably more than the other.

Several fantastic cheap Rolex watches, both vintage and modern, can be added to your collection for a surprisingly reasonable investment. The cost of a Rolex watch can be realistic for new collectors if you are looking at specific affordable models.

Can You Get a Cheap Rolex Watch?

In today’s market, cheap Rolex watches are typically between $6,000 to $11,000 or less. While several thousand dollars is by no means cheap, it’s still on the more affordable end for luxury swiss watches – especially considering that other brands, like Patek Philippe, have an entry point of at least $20,000.

It’s easy to find an affordable Rolex watch to suit your style and make your wallet happy, especially if you know what to look for and where to shop. From sporty to dressy, read on to find our top picks for cheap Rolex watches under $11,000.

Cheap Rolex Watches: Top 10 References

Wearing a Rolex is always linked to status. In pop culture and everyday life, having one on the wrist speaks volumes about one’s financial and professional successes, and it isn’t limited to a specific collection.

We’ve selected these ten great watch options for entry-level collectors who want to invest in a Rolex watch, but aren’t ready for the $20,000+ price tag of a Rolex Submariner watch.

Air-King 5500

The first is the Rolex Air-King 5500, which made its debut in 1957. Incredibly, Rolex continued to produce the Air-King ref. 5500 well into the 1990s, leaving behind a solid assortment of well-priced, pre-owned examples for today’s collectors.

Key Features:

  • 34mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 1520, 1530, and 3130 movements
  • Smooth steel bezel
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet

Price:

The average cost of an Air-King ref. 5500 on Bob’s Watches is about $6,500, with the least expensive watch coming in at just under $5,000. One outlier in our collection of ref. 5500 watches is the Domino’s Pizza dial pictured above. For this piece, collectors can expect to pay $17,000.

Air-King 14000

In the 1990s, the brand introduced the Rolex Air-King 14000 model number. While the watch retains the familiar 34mm steel case and time-only dial, protecting the face of the watch is scratch-resistant sapphire crystal rather than one made from acrylic.

Furthermore, some ref. 14000 dials weren’t just vibrant blue; they included the 3, 6, and 9 indexes typically found on Explorer watches, which gave this no-frills watch an intriguing design twist.

Key Features:

  • 34mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 1520 and 1530 movements
  • Smooth steel bezel
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet

Price:

The Air-King ref.14000 is one of the cheaper Rolex watches available on Bob’s Watches. You can typically find one in excellent condition for around $5,000.

Air-King 114200

Launched at Baselworld 2007, this generation of the Air-King carries the same official 34mm case size. Although, the watch wears slightly bigger due to its thicker profile and wider lugs. The Rolex 114200 Air-King reference was the first in the collection to be COSC-certified, as denoted by the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” text on the dial.

Some of these newer affordable Rolex watches feature a fancier dial execution with Roman numerals, 11 hand-applied white gold hour markers, and a prominent minute track.

Key Features:

  • 34mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3130 movement
  • Smooth steel bezel
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet

Price:

Typically the ref.114200 can be found on Bob’s Watches for $5,000 to $6,000, with some unique watches costing as much as $9,000.

Air-King 116900

The brand discontinued the Rolex 114200 Air-King reference in 2014 and replaced it with the Oyster Perpetual ref.114200, raising speculation that it was the end of the Air-King collection. However, in 2016, the Air-King made its comeback with an entirely new design.

Bearing almost no resemblance to its predecessors, the Air-King ref. 116900 sports a larger case borrowed from the Rolex Milgauss watch model, complete with an antimagnetic shield, a sportier dial with hour and minute numerals, and flashes of green and yellow.

Key Features:

  • 40mm stainless steel case with antimagnetic shield
  • Automatic 3131 movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet

Price:

Compared to some other Air-Kings, the ref. 116900 can be a little more expensive. Typically, collectors can expect to pay around $8,000 for one of these newer Rolex watches.

Explorer 14270

The Rolex Explorer 14270 model number came onto the scene towards the end of the 1980s. Similar to the previous references, this reference has a smaller case, the classic Oyster bracelet, and a black dial with the characteristic 3/6/9 hour markers.

However, Rolex fitted the ref.14270 with modern touches like a sapphire crystal, a glossy dial, and hand-applied white gold hour markers (instead of painted ones) filled with luminous material.

Key Features:

  • 36mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3000 movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet

Price:

Typically, this entry-level Rolex watch will cost between $5,000 to $8,000, depending on the reference’s unique features and the overall condition of the watch. Other factors, like if it comes with the original box and papers, may also impact the cost of the timepiece.

Explorer 214270

In 2010, the Rolex Explorer watch line received its most significant design updates since its inception in the 1950s. The current production Rolex 214270 Explorer watch now has a larger 39mm Oyster case and is powered by the updated Caliber 3132 movement, which features Rolex’s new Paraflex shock absorbers. This particular example of the Explorer ref. 214270 is an earlier example of this reference family with the so-called Mark I Dial, which includes solid white gold 3, 6, and 9-hour markers instead of the lume-filled ones that came after.

Key Features:

  • 39mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3132 movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet

Price:

With the ref. 21470, collectors should expect to pay between $9,000 and $10,000 for one of these luxury watches. Factors like distinguishable eras of the dial (Mark I vs. Mark II), condition, and original box and papers all impact the secondary market price.

Datejust ref. 16013

If classic two-tone luxury watches are your style, then this Rolex 16013 Datejust model number is a fantastic option as an entry-level luxury watch. This two-tone watch has a yellow gold fluted bezel on a smaller case with a Jubilee bracelet and automatic movement. Unlike many other watches on this list, the dial has various color options ranging from simple white to champagne – and in some cases, even a rich blue dial. Unlike later models, this reference has an acrylic crystal protecting the dial, but that doesn’t take away from its beauty.

Key Features:

  • 36mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3035 movement
  • Acrylic crystal
  • Stainless steel and gold Jubilee bracelet

Price:

Typically, the Datejust ref. 16013 will cost between $6,000 and $7,000. The dial color doesn’t typically impact the price of one of these references, making this entry-level watch an excellent choice for collectors who want options.

Datejust ref. 16233

Another great option is the Rolex 16233 Datejust timepice. An affordable Rolex watch with various dial designs, this two-tone Rolex is a stylish dress watch that looks good in the case or on the wrist. Smaller and with a simple fluted bezel, it’s a handsome timepiece.

Key Features:

  • 36mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3135 movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel and gold Jubilee bracelet

Price:

Collectors can find a mint condition ref. 16233 typically between $7,000 and $8,000. There are outliers, though, like this black dial version, which can cost a little more and usually has a waitlist.

Datejust ref. 16234

If stainless steel Datejust watches are more your speed, then buying a Rolex Datejust 16234 is a solid choice. With its white gold fluted bezel on top of its 36mm steel case and Jubilee bracelet, this reference is a dressier option for new collectors.

Key Features:

  • 36mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3135 movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Jubilee bracelet

Price:

Typically, collectors can find the ref. 16234 for under $8,000 on the pre-owned market. Special editions or unique dial designs might be a little more, but this is a quality, cheap Rolex watch for the most part.

Datejust ref. 16200

A sportier offering is the Rolex 16200 Datejust watch. Like others on this list, it features a smooth steel bezel, Oyster bracelet, and a few dial options, including Arabic numerals or Silver indexes. This Datejust is a more straightforward watch designed for simplicity and functionality rather than looks. It even includes the Cyclops lens over the date for easy viewing. Like almost any other Rolex, it can still be worn with more formal wear to enhance the outfit.

Key Features:

  • 36mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3135 movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • Stainless steel Jubilee bracelet

Price:

Price-wise, this reference is a great choice for entry-level collectors. Like any Rolex, it is an investment, but typically only costs around $6,000 or $7,000.

Date ref. 15210

A refined yet versatile option is the Rolex Date 15210 watch. This model maintains the brand’s commitment to excellence, blending classic aesthetics with practical features. It comes with a distinctive engine-turned bezel, giving it a unique texture that sets it apart from the smoother options. The Oyster bracelet offers a robust and sporty feel, complementing various dial choices including Roman numerals or stick indexes. The Date 15210 focuses on delivering an elegant simplicity, ensuring functionality remains paramount without compromising on style. The inclusion of the Cyclops lens over the date enhances readability, a thoughtful touch reflecting Rolex’s attention to detail. Despite its elegance, this model is perfectly suited for daily wear, effortlessly bridging the gap between casual and formal attire.

Key Features:

  • 34mm stainless steel case
  • Automatic 3135 movement, ensuring precise timekeeping
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, offering durability
  • Stainless steel Oyster bracelet, known for its comfort and strength
  • Engine Turned bezel

Price:

The Rolex Date 15210 is an excellent selection for those beginning their journey into the world of luxury watches. It represents a sound investment in the Rolex brand without the higher price tag often associated with its counterparts. Typically, it is available for about $5,000 to $6,000, making it a more accessible option for enthusiasts looking to own a piece of Rolex’s iconic watchmaking heritage.

What Do You Get For The Price Of A Rolex?

When you purchase a Rolex, you get a high-quality Swiss wristwatch with a name recognized worldwide. Moreover, it’s built to last for generations, making one of these timepieces a family heirloom.

Rolex watches are not only luxurious, but practical too. They are typically fitted with complications and features that are useful rather than whimsical. However, if you know where to look, which models to add to your list, and how to buy a Rolex, you can also score a great deal by buying a pre-owned Rolex.

It’s true that Rolex watches require a significant investment. It’s also true that there are countless relatively cheap Rolex watches exist on the pre-owned market.

If you’re ready to invest, get to know one of these affordable Rolex watches up close as our experts review these timepieces.

Do Rolex Watches Hold Their Value?

If you’re considering investing in a Rolex watch, you can rest easy: Pre-owned Rolex watches almost always hold their value.

Much like cars, many Rolex watches that are easier to buy at retail depreciate the minute you buy them. But, if you purchase secondhand, the original owner has already incurred that loss, leaving you with nothing but profit if you choose to sell it later.  If you bought your Rolex retail, hang onto it; that investment will likely resell for the original retail price if you wait long enough.

One thing to keep in mind is that Rolex watches purchased at retail don’t always depreciate when you leave the store. Some of the more sought-after stainless steel sports watches often command astronomical amounts on the secondary market due to high demand and low inventory.

In short, Rolex watches hold their value and are worth the investment either very quickly or in the years to come.
