When To Sell

How do you know when it's time to move on? A quick internet search will result in thousands of thoughtful, carefully crafted articles helping you move on from your job or significant other. However, there's far less information out there on how to know when it's time to move on and sell your Rolex timepiece. Here, I'm breaking down when it's time to break up with your luxury watch and move on. Grab the tissues and get ready for a dose of honesty - you might not be ready for this.

When you can't remember the last time you wore it

Was it memorial day 2015? No, New Years 2017 - maybe. You know it's been too long when you can't even remember the last time that you put it on your wrist, let it peek out from under your cuff and hoped someone would comment on it. If this is the case, it may be time to sell your timepiece.

When it stops telling time

If you go check on your watch now, can it even tell the time? Manual watches need to be wound regularly, and if your automatic has sat in the closet rather than on your wrist, there's been nothing to power it and keep it going. Maybe you're just going through a phase with this watch, or maybe you alternate between several different timepieces, but it could also be a greater indication that you’re just not that into it anymore.

When your eye is wandering

Find yourself looking at upgrades? Maybe switching out that stainless steel Datejust for a two-tone version with an 18k yellow gold fluted bezel. Or, maybe you find yourself looking for something new that better suits your current lifestyle? Maybe the Datejust was great for around the office, but now that you’re in the C-Suite, you need something like a Day-Date President that will speak for itself.

When you'd rather have the cash

Watches are so much more than their face value to their collectors. They hold a strong emotional connection with us - whether it's tied to a special life event or just because we love the object itself. So when you start looking at your watch and seeing dollar signs instead of feeling that emotional pull you once did, it could be time to sell your timepiece, cash out, and move on.

When you don't have anyone to give it to

A lot of times collectors will gift starter pieces they’ve moved on from to younger collectors or family members. Sometimes collectors like yourself might even hand down more well-established pieces to celebrate big life events. There's the added bonus that this means you can get something new now, right? But, if you don't have anyone in mind to gift the watch to - or don’t have anyone in your life who would appreciate your Rolex the way that it should be - choosing to sell your timepiece is the next best option.
